With America already in the midst of a horrendous and all-encompassing electoral nightmare, the last thing that any of us need is another threat, foreign or domestic, to worry about.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear as though we’re going to get to rest easy anytime soon, as a chilling message breached US air traffic control radio waves on Tuesday.
Multiple air traffic controllers in New York heard a chilling threat Monday in audio obtained exclusively by CBS News: “We are flying a plane into the Capitol on Wednesday. Soleimani will be avenged.”
The threat refers to, the Iranian general killed last year in a U.S. drone strike ordered by President Trump. It was made on the one-year anniversary of Soleimani’s death, for which Iranian officials have long vowed revenge.
The government is looking to downplay the terror threat.
It’s unclear who sent the threat. While the government does not believe the warning of an attack is credible, it is being investigated as a breach of aviation frequencies, CBS News has learned.
The choice of the Capitol to be threatened was likely intentional, as the Vice President will be presiding over the counting of the electoral college votes on the floor of Congress on Wednesday – a process that will be the focal point of the national political scene until it has concluded.
