Joe Biden is not exactly the candidate that the younger generation of Democrats wanted. To them, he represents the establishment, and the status quo of politicians who came before him, cementing their legacies with policies and politics that behooved them and only them.
But, Biden is who the Democratic establishment preferred, perhaps because he was someone who they understood. Who they could control and/or predict. But, given that Biden is living on this knife edge between centrist popularity and liberal loathing, those around him are hoping to just skate him through to the election with as few mistakes as possible.
That could mean choosing not to debate incumbent President Donald Trump at any point during the next 90-some days.
Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary for President Bill Clinton, is publicly advising former Vice President Joe Biden not to debate President Donald Trump.
Lockhart published an op-ed last week at CNN.com warning Biden that he should not debate Trump because the latter is prone to statement that fail the fact-checking test (original emphasis):
Whatever you do, don’t debate Trump. Trump has now made more than 20,000 misleading or false statements according to the Washington Post. It’s a fool’s errand to enter the ring with someone who can’t follow the rules or the truth. Biden will undoubtedly take heat from Republicans and the media for skipping the debates. But it’s worth the risk as trying to debate someone incapable of telling the truth is an impossible contest to win.
Biden’s 2020 campaign has been filled to the brim with gaffes, temper tantrums, and a healthy dose of gibberish, making this advice seem like some of the best he has yet gotten on the subject.
