Biden’s Use of Marines at Speech Sparks Controversy

There were plenty of shocking moments and motifs during Joe Biden’s “soul of the nation” speech on Thursday night, but one choice in particular has patriotic Americans perturbed.

No, it wasn’t the Hell-red background, or the demeaning tone by which the President, our President, addressed half of the nation.  Sure, those things were bad enough, from an optics standpoint and “lead by example” standpoint respectively, but what really irked America were the two Marines standing behind him.

Biden had promised during his first visit to the Pentagon as president, “I will never dishonor you. I will never disrespect you. I will never politicize the work you do.”

Yet, as the president delivered his speech attacking the opposition political party, the sight of two Marine sentries positioned in the backdrop behind him drew criticism from Republican officials, conservative pundits, Marine veterans, but also from mainstream media journalists.

The imagery had social media users in a tizzy.

Biden has often portrayed himself as a rather military-sensitive President, often speaking of his late son Beau, who served in Iraq.

This use of the Marines, particularly during such a profoundly controversial speech, is sure to chip away at that reputation.
