Community Stunned After Preacher Attacked

A 26-year-old Christian man is currently fighting for his life after being shot in the head while preaching on a street corner in Glendale, Arizona. The victim, Hans Schmidt, a military veteran and father of two young children, was standing at the corner of 51st Ave and Peoria on Wednesday evening, sharing his faith and inviting passersby to a church service. However, his evening took a tragic turn when he was suddenly shot by an unknown assailant.

According to witnesses, Schmidt was facing a barrage of hateful comments and curses from some individuals passing by, but he remained calm and did not respond to them. However, shortly after 6:00 p.m., a person fired a shot at him and fled the scene, leaving Schmidt critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was immediately intubated due to his severe injuries.

The news of this senseless act of violence has shocked and saddened the community, especially those who knew Schmidt. His wife, Zulya, took to social media to ask for prayers for her husband, saying, “My husband was shot in the head yesterday while street preaching. If anyone has any info, please contact 911. Thank you for your prayers. Believing God has the final say. I love you so much babe.”

Schmidt serves as the outreach director at Victory Chapel, and the church has also provided updates on his condition, asking for continued prayers. On Thursday, they reported that Schmidt had begun seizing and was being closely monitored by physicians. Today, they announced that there had been some movement, but it is unclear if it was voluntary. His wife also posted a heart-wrenching message, saying, “I love you my handsome cowboy. Keep fighting papi. We need you!!”

The Glendale Police Department is currently investigating the shooting and is asking for any witnesses to come forward with information. So far, it is believed that a person in a passing vehicle or someone who approached Schmidt on the street may have been responsible for the attack. The police have urged anyone with information to contact them or Silent Witness.

Meanwhile, the community is in shock and disbelief over this horrendous act. Schmidt is described by those who know him as a kind, loving, and dedicated family man who was simply sharing his faith on a street corner. As Henry Branch, a resident in the area, said, “Who knows why someone would want to take it out on a preacher like that because he’s speaking the gospel and good news to everybody. He’s out to help the community.”

As Schmidt continues to fight for his life, the community is coming together in support and prayer, hoping for his full recovery. The Glendale Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing justice for this innocent victim.
