Don’t tread on me. It’s a phrase that is ubiquitous with the American experience, and it is every bit as cogent and poignant as the proclamation “give me liberty or give me death”.
This is a free nation, after all. That’s the whole idea. We broke free from, (and subsequently spanked), the most powerful military in the world at the time to declare our independence, and by God, we need to continue to keep it.
That’s why recent threats being made by the Department of Homeland Security are so worrisome.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf has sent a letter to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, urging the Democrat to request federal assistance for his city after months of riots.
“I urge you to prioritize public safety and to request federal assistance to restore law and order in Portland,” Wolf wrote in the letter dated Aug. 31. “We are standing by to support Portland. At the same time, President Trump has made it abundantly clear that there will come a point when state and local officials fail to protect its citizens from violence, the federal government will have no choice but to protect our American citizens.”
Portland has seen over three months of nightly violent protests, including three recent killings, as pro-Trump groups and left-leaning protesters have fought in the streets.
President Trump has long maintained his belief that federal forces would not be used to police American cities unless local authorities requested such assistance. Sure, Trump has implored them to do so, but the Commander in Chief has been very clear about where the law stands on this matter.
Secretary Wolf, however, seems to have less reverence for the Constitution than President Trump, and this latest threat has American patriots growing concerned.
