Here’s What Police Found at Ilhan Omar’s Son’s Home

A Minneapolis police investigation involving guns, ammunition and a 22-year-old man facing a weapons charge has picked up an additional layer of attention for one very specific reason: The apartment police searched is reportedly where the son of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar lives.

Now, stay with me, because that detail is going to grab the headlines, but it is not the same thing as saying Omar’s son committed a crime.

According to Alpha News reporter Liz Collin, law enforcement sources said police executed a search warrant at the Minneapolis apartment earlier this week and recovered guns and ammunition.

But police have not said Omar’s son was arrested. They have not announced charges against him. And based on the information reported so far, authorities have not publicly identified him as a suspect.

The man who was arrested is 22-year-old Abdulrahman Abdi.


And the trail that reportedly led police to that apartment began with a traffic stop.

According to a screenshot of a police report shared by Collin, an officer stopped a vehicle in the 200 block of 11th Street South in Minneapolis. The driver was cited for driving after cancellation and failing to provide proof of insurance.

The driver was then released.

The vehicle, however, was impounded.

And that is where this story starts getting more serious.

During the impound process, police recovered a firearm from the vehicle, according to the report Collin shared. Investigators subsequently tracked Abdi to the apartment, and he was eventually booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a weapons charge.

Minneapolis police say the investigation remains ongoing.

So here’s the sequence: traffic stop, vehicle impounded, firearm discovered, investigators track Abdi to an apartment, police execute a search warrant, and law enforcement sources say guns and ammunition are recovered there.

Then comes the political connection.

That apartment, according to the reports, is also where Omar’s son lives.

That is certainly noteworthy. But it is also where people need to keep the facts straight. Living at an apartment searched by police does not establish ownership of whatever police found there, and it does not automatically make every resident a suspect.

Meanwhile, Abdi reportedly has a criminal history of his own.

The Daily Mail, citing court records it reviewed, reported that Abdi has been convicted 10 times previously, with most of those cases involving misdemeanors.

The newspaper reported that last year he was found to have been speeding while driving despite his license having been revoked for a previous offense.

Then there is the 2024 case.


According to the Daily Mail, Abdi was convicted of a felony after officers reported catching him traveling at 108 miles per hour in St. Paul.

That background gives police plenty to examine without jumping ahead of what investigators have actually said about anyone else connected to the apartment.

Omar, one of the best-known progressive Democrats in Congress, has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019. Her name being attached to this story through her son guarantees attention that an ordinary Minneapolis weapons arrest probably would never receive.

But here’s the thing: The politically explosive version of this story is not necessarily the accurate version.

The facts currently reported are narrower.

Police stopped a vehicle. The vehicle was impounded. A firearm was allegedly discovered. Investigators tracked Abdi to an apartment. Abdi was arrested on a weapons charge. Police searched that apartment, where Omar’s son reportedly lives, and law enforcement sources said guns and ammunition were recovered.
