Kamala Harris’s Thanksgiving Fail!

Vice President Kamala Harris faced backlash on social media after sharing a Thanksgiving post on Twitter featuring her and second gentleman Doug Emhoff cooking in their kitchen. The photo that sparked criticism showed the couple posing next to a gas stove, which contradicted the Biden administration’s previous proposal to ban gas stoves.

Harris shared the Thanksgiving greeting on November 26, writing, “From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.” However, this seemingly innocent gesture quickly turned into a heated debate online as several conservatives pointed out the gas stove in the photo.

“Is that a gas stove?” responded Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., along with former Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and conservative activist Laura Loomer who also posted about the observation.

The Biden administration had previously claimed its plans to ban gas stoves due to health concerns. In an interview with Bloomberg, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s top leader, Richard Trumka Jr., stated that “a ban on gas stoves is on the table.” He further elaborated, “This is a hidden hazard. Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

However, this idea was later scrapped, and the Biden administration proposed a Department of Energy regulation that would impose difficult energy efficiency standards for gas stoves. In March, the House of Representatives approved an amendment, with bipartisan support, to prevent the DOE from implementing strict new regulations on gas stoves that most stoves on the market today would not be able to meet.

The amendment proposed by Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., received 29 votes from Democrats, and the House voted 251 to 181 in favor of it. It is estimated that about 40 million American households, or 38%, use natural gas to cook in their homes.

Despite the backlash, it is important to note that Harris did not express her personal views on gas stoves in the post. The photo may have simply been a nod to traditional Thanksgiving cooking traditions and her sharing a special moment with her family.
