The story of Smokin Thighs, a beloved Nashville restaurant, has come to a tragic and infuriating end, thanks to an all-too-familiar scenario that no one wants to talk about—an illegal immigrant committing a heinous crime and the system once again failing to protect innocent Americans. This past weekend, the restaurant shut its doors for good, just months after its owner, Matt Carney, lost his life in an attempted robbery carried out by an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
Smokin Thighs was a staple in the Nashville community, serving up good food and good times for over a decade. Matt Carney, 42, had poured his heart and soul into the restaurant, which started as a humble food truck and grew into a local favorite. But on June 19, Carney’s life was tragically cut short when he tried to stop an illegal alien from stealing tools out of his truck. Carney was then killed by 29-year-old Ulises Martinez, an illegal immigrant who had no business being in this country to begin with. According to police, Martinez hit Carney during an attempted robbery in the parking lot of the restaurant. Carney was left bleeding out in the street, later dying of his injuries on July 4.
“Look at what’s happening to our cities. Our cities are being overrun,” Trump said. “On July 4th, a 42-year-old Nashville man died after he tried to stop an illegal alien from stealing tools out of his truck. The illegal alien did a number on this man that nobody could even believe. The police officers said [it was] one of the most vicious crimes they’ve ever seen.”
And where was Martinez? At a Nashville motel, laying low until police finally tracked him down and charged him with murder. Days later, it was revealed that Martinez had entered the country illegally—shocking, right?—with ICE confirming they had no clue when or where he snuck across the border. Oh, and let’s not forget about the other guy involved in this tragedy, 31-year-old Adrian Diaz-Aguirre. This fine gentleman has been deported four times before, and yet, here he was, back on American soil and involved in another crime.

Molly Carney, Matt’s widow, broke the sad news this past Sunday that Smokin Thighs would be closing for good. In a heartfelt message, she thanked the Nashville community for supporting the restaurant and her family over the years, especially in the months following Matt’s death. It’s hard to imagine what this family is going through—losing a loved one is hard enough without knowing that the person responsible shouldn’t have even been in the country in the first place.
“Saying goodbye is hard. It’s really hard,” she posted. “It is with profound sadness that I share the time has come for us all to say goodbye to Smokin’ Thighs.”
“To the Nashville community, I’ll be forever grateful for your welcoming spirit of Smokin’ Thighs. Your unwavering support of our family, particularly in these past months, has been remarkable,” she added. “Without you Matt’s dream would never have become a reality.”

This is the reality of what happens when we allow our borders to be overrun and turn a blind eye to illegal immigration. Former President Donald Trump summed it up perfectly when he discussed Carney’s death, pointing out how our cities are becoming overrun with crime thanks to the lack of enforcement on illegal immigration.
Meet Democrat activist Judge Jim Todd. In March he dismissed 3 felony charges for Ulises Martinez, a Mexican national who’s in our country illegally.

Matt Carney’s life was stolen by a broken system that prioritizes politics over public safety. His family, his community, and his restaurant—gone. All because someone who shouldn’t have been here was allowed to stay. How many more times does this need to happen before we wake up and start putting the safety of Americans first?
