The public expected a transparent look at pandemic decisions. The diary tells a different story. Dr. Anthony Fauci spent his time railing against the far right while describing strong support from the Biden White House. That was the plan. The reality is a 1,141-page document released by Congress that shows deep contempt for his critics.
According to the Washington Examiner, the former health chief dismissed concerns about the virus’s origins as right-wing propaganda. He called the lab-leak theory a “way-out conspiracy theory” in April 2021. In his own writing, he argued that the sheer volume of irrational people around him turned the issue into a battle. This is the man who ran our health response.
The diary covers more than viral spread. It targets individuals. Fauci referred to the “far right” more than 60 times. He named Sen. Rand Paul at least 84 times. The former NIAID director called the senator an “idiot,” a “fool,” and a “total nut cake.” In a September 2020 entry, he wrote that he completely overwhelmed the person ranting nonsense while pretending to be an experienced epidemiologist.
Per the NY Post Opinion, Fauci claimed the White House letting Rand Paul explain his plans “borders on criminal.” He viewed the senator’s inquiry into the virus as a “publicity stunt” and a “total farse.” He asserted that these demands were obviously aimed at entrapping him, frequently originating from conspiracy theorists yet also from Republican operatives.
Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services found these writings on its servers. They handed the diary to Sen. Rand Paul. The document shows Fauci felt safe mocking a fellow public servant behind closed doors.
Consider the entry from May 2020 regarding his clash with Paul. Fauci wrote, “I went back at him and tweets said I came out way on top.” He dismissed Freedom of Information Act requests about his finances and calls as attacks from “dark web far right maniacs.” Meanwhile, he praised the administration that gave him power.
His dismissal of Paul’s belief that schools should stay open as a “real problem” reveals a distinct attitude. He called his critics crazy. He called his allies supportive. The language in a September 2020 entry was ugly: “Had hostile interaction with Se. [sic] Rand Paul.” The attitude behind it was worse.
This diary proves that the people in charge did not think you were a partner. They thought you were a problem to be managed. They used their power to shut down schools and businesses while mocking those who disagreed. The public needs to see exactly how officials viewed the very people they serve. Fauci knew he was under scrutiny. He wrote, “These are clearly directed at trying to catch me at something.” He kept going anyway.
