WNBA Stars Block Arrest, Police Deploy Tasers In Miami

New bodycam footage released this week shows Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale being arrested outside a Miami nightclub. The video captures several WNBA players crowding around her as officers tried to take her into custody. The incident happened in March, just hours after Ogunbowale won a championship in the new 3-on-3 league called Unrivaled. The scene turned chaotic when players refused to back away from the officers. Police reports state Ogunbowale had punched a male staff member earlier that night.

According to RedState, the footage shows Paige Bueckers wrapping an arm around Ogunbowale. Bueckers told the officer, “We got her.” Other players, including Jackie Young and DiJonai Carrington, also joined the group. The arresting officer ordered the crowd to move back, but they did not listen. The situation escalated quickly when the officer pointed a Taser near Bueckers’ face to make them let go.

The video also captures loud voices from the group surrounding the arrest. Maria Clifton, the unrivaled host, is audible shouting at law enforcement. She yelled, “Stop it. Do not put handcuffs on her. Are you fucking kidding me? She’s a champion.” The officer eventually drew his Taser again to clear the way. The group finally released Ogunbowale to the officers after the warning.

According to reports, Ogunbowale struck the man using a closed fist. Nightclub video also backed up the man’s account of the event. The Athletic reported that the punch happened while she was being escorted out for another argument. Misdemeanor battery charges were filed against Ogunbowale, who subsequently paid $1,000 bail. She was released from custody that night.

The legal case moved quickly after the arrest. Court documents show the charges were dropped in May. Mitch Schuster, the attorney for Arike Ogunbowale, spoke to ESPN about the decision.

Schuster added, “Ms. Ogunbowale is a person of outstanding character, and we are excited that these charges have been dismissed so she can resume her focus on her professional career.” The State Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue the case further. The footage obtained by The New York Post was shared widely on social media Tuesday. It shows the exact moment police used force to separate the players from their teammate.
