Ford is recalling more than 741,000 vehicles across the United States after federal safety regulators identified a transmission defect that could allow some vehicles to roll away even after they have been shifted into park.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects certain Ford F-150 pickups, Ford Explorer and Expedition SUVs, as well as Lincoln Aviator and Navigator models from the 2018 through 2021 model years.

The issue centers on the transmission’s parking pawl, a mechanical component designed to lock the transmission and prevent the vehicle from moving once it is placed in park. Regulators say that under certain driving conditions, the parking pawl can temporarily engage while the vehicle is still in motion during specific transmission shifts, potentially damaging components within the parking system.
If that damage occurs, drivers may believe the vehicle is securely parked when it is not. Without the parking brake engaged, the vehicle could roll away unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
The NHTSA said Ford is aware of 24 reports involving property damage that may be related to the defect, along with nine alleged injuries. According to the agency, two of those reported injuries were classified as emotional injuries.
To address the problem, Ford will notify affected owners by mail and instruct them to schedule service at an authorized dealership. Technicians will update the vehicle’s Powertrain Control Module software and inspect the transmission parking system for any damage. If damaged components are found, they will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the owner.
