So, what does the new policy entail? It allows noncitizens who have been in the U.S. for at least 10 years and are married to an American citizen, along with their children, to apply for permanent residence without having to leave the country. This is a significant change from the previous cumbersome and risky system that often resulted in family separations.
During a ceremony at the White House, President Biden described the steps as a “commonsense fix” to an overly complicated system. He emphasized that the order, set to go into effect this summer, would not benefit recent arrivals but would instead help those who have been contributing to the country for years through paying taxes and being active community members.
