Former Sen. Joe Manchin appeared on the campaign trail in Maine on Wednesday to support Republican Sen. Susan Collins. This move delivers a direct political snub to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has targeted Collins for her independent record. The confirmed his appearance as the race for a sixth Senate term tightens.
Manchin served with Collins throughout his entire career in the upper chamber. He told reporters that his visit aims to show Maine voters her bipartisan track record. He highlighted her work on the infrastructure package passed under former President Joe Biden.
Collins faces a tough challenge from former state Sen. Troy Jackson. Jackson has attracted heavy support from national progressive leaders. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have joined him on the stump. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is also scheduled to campaign for Jackson. Collins spokeswoman Blake Kernan stated these allies expose the challenger’s true agenda.
“Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez represent the far left of the national Democratic Party,” Kernan said, according to Fox News. She argued that their presence in Maine shows exactly how Jackson would govern if elected. Manchin’s support serves as a sharp rebuke to the current Democratic leadership.
While Manchin backs a moderate Republican, Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin made a controversial statement at the University of Chicago. During a Tuesday event, Slotkin admitted she wants to use legal prosecutions to scare young Republicans away from government service. The University of Chicago Institute of Politics hosted the event where she spoke. The reporter Astead Herndon asked if Democrats would consider impeaching President Trump.
Slotkin said he was thinking too small and wants to pursue “signature cases” against those who enable the president. She stated her goal is to make young people fear joining a future administration.
University of Chicago student Michael Bicksel told the school’s conservative paper that Slotkin warned them to live in fear of persecution. He said she urged them to avoid serving in the Trump administration. Bicksel added that their side will never be intimidated by her tactics. This admission comes as Democrats have been open about potential repercussions for their political opposition.
The Maine race remains close after Graham Platner dropped out earlier this year. Platner’s campaign ended following a sexual assault allegation. Collins is now fighting to keep her seat against a challenger backed by the far left. Manchin’s visit underscores the deep divide within the Democratic Party between moderates and progressives.
Collins continues to emphasize her record of effective, independent leadership. Her team says Manchin’s presence proves she delivers results for Maine and America. The vote in November will decide if this independent streak continues or if the far left takes a seat.
