Some stories practically write themselves, and this one is a case study in self-inflicted disaster.
A law enforcement officer — someone entrusted with enforcing laws and safeguarding the rights of others — decided it would be a good idea to go on social media and openly declare allegiance to Antifa, a group that, as of this week, has been designated a domestic terrorist organization.
Meet Brian D. Edwards, formerly a detention corporal with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina. Thanks to posts unearthed and amplified by the meme account Mostly Peaceful Memes, we now know Edwards wasn’t shy about his politics. He wrote:
“My name is Brian
I am 37 years old
I am in North Carolina
I am Antifa
And I will never comply with a fascist regime.”
If that wasn’t enough, he also called for right-wingers to be “thrown in prison” or even sent to the “guillotine.” Think about that: a detention officer openly fantasizing about locking up or executing the very citizens he might have been responsible for housing. That’s not just reckless. That’s terrifying.
Sheriff Charles Blackwood didn’t hesitate. Edwards was suspended over the weekend after the posts went viral and terminated Monday morning. Blackwood was blunt: “We must maintain the public trust as we go about our mission to protect, serve, and treat everyone with dignity and respect.”
And he’s right. You cannot build trust when one of your officers is pledging loyalty to a radical group responsible for riots, political violence, and, most recently, linked ideologically to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The irony is rich. Edwards proclaimed he would “never comply with a fascist regime,” yet in an actual fascist regime, his anti-government screeds would have landed him in prison — or worse. Instead, he enjoyed the freedom to embarrass himself in song and posturing on Bluesky, the far-left echo chamber where his rantings were shared.
But freedom doesn’t mean freedom from consequences. Antifa has burned cities, assaulted journalists, and declared war on anyone wearing a red hat or holding a flag. No one who aligns themselves with that ideology should ever wear a badge.
Edwards has now learned that the hard way. And Sheriff Blackwood deserves credit for acting swiftly, cutting ties before the damage spread further.
