On Monday, Seattle Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles decided to change the way the city talks about violent criminals. Instead of using the word “shooters,” he chose to call them “trigger-pullers” during a public meeting. This odd choice of words caught the attention of many people watching the proceedings. According to the Daily Wire, Sayles made this statement while discussing how the city plans to handle crime.
According to reports, his group is seeking people described as “trigger pullers in our community.” He explained that the goal is to identify these people and build cases against them. The chief said he wants to work with the King County Prosecutor’s Office to bring these individuals to justice. He noted that families who lost loved ones deserve justice in this manner.
The new terminology sounds very much like the style of Mayor Katie Wilson. Per the Daily Wire, Wilson is an activist mayor who once said she wanted to disband the Seattle Police Department entirely. She has talked about building a future “entirely without SPD.” While violent crimes continue to happen on the streets, her administration seems focused on changing words instead of backing the police.
The city has seen a lot of bloodshed recently. In July, a mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival left two bystanders dead and four wounded. One of the victims was a toddler. Despite this tragedy, Wilson removed former Police Chief Shon Barnes and replaced him with Sayles. According to the Daily Wire, this move came while the department struggled with a force that is down hundreds of officers from normal levels.
Kent Loux, the president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, has been very vocal about these changes. He has repeatedly slammed Wilson’s priorities as dangerous for the city. Earlier this year, City Hall tried to force the union to delete a social media post about a triple shooting outside a nightclub. The city claimed the police leaked sensitive footage. The union refused and sent a cease-and-desist order, forcing the mayor’s office to back down.
Financial decisions are also raising concerns among officers. The city scrapped $50,000 signing bonuses for experienced officers. This cut makes it hard for the department to attract veteran cops when they are already short on staff. At the same time, Wilson approved over $800,000 in taxpayer funds for specialized LGBT and trans “community stabilization” initiatives. The Daily Wire reports that the mayor also ordered high-tech surveillance cameras to stay dark near the Stadium District. She cited “privacy concerns” over catching killers, which left detectives asking the public for help.
Kent Loux bluntly stated that Wilson believes public safety means “bus lanes” and activist payouts. Rank-and-file officers know that safety actually requires “boots on the ground.” The mayor’s approach is draining resources directly from law enforcement while the force shrinks. Surrounding cities are offering actual police support to their neighbors. The city is left with a plan that prioritizes language over safety.
