GOP Committee Claims Evidence of $200,000 Direct Payment to President Biden

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, has announced that his committee has uncovered evidence suggesting that President Joe Biden received a $200,000 direct payment from his brother James Biden and sister-in-law Sara Biden back in 2018. Comer’s panel has been conducting an investigation into the Biden family’s business dealings since January, probing whether President Biden was involved in these ventures or personally benefited from them.

Comer revealed in a video posted on the social media platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter) that bank records obtained by the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability showed a $200,000 payment from James and Sara Biden to Joe Biden in the form of a personal check. This payment was purportedly characterized as a “loan repayment” by James Biden.

According to Comer, in 2018, James Biden received $600,000 in loans from Americore, a financially distressed rural hospital operator. These loans were allegedly granted based on the belief that James Biden’s last name could open doors and facilitate investments from the Middle East due to his political connections. On March 1, 2018, Americore wired a $200,000 loan into James and Sara Biden’s personal bank account, and on the same day, James Biden wrote a $200,000 check from this personal account to Joe Biden, characterizing it as a loan repayment.

Comer expressed concern that President Biden’s ability to be repaid by his brother seemed to depend on the success of their family’s financial dealings, which raises questions about potential conflicts of interest. He demanded that President Biden answer several questions, including whether he can produce documents confirming that he lent such a substantial sum of money to his brother and the terms of this financial arrangement. Comer also raised the possibility of similar financial arrangements with other family members.

The White House responded to these allegations through spokesperson Ian Sams, who asserted that the House Oversight Committee’s investigation has turned up no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. Sams labeled the investigation as a distraction and an attempt to undermine the administration’s credibility, emphasizing that the President did nothing wrong and that he merely loaned his brother money when he needed it, as shown in bank records.

Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, criticized the Republican investigation, claiming that it failed to uncover any wrongdoing by President Biden and that it was an “embarrassing and privacy-violating wild goose chase.”
