Israel Reportedly Hacked An Iranian Prayer App To Disseminate Messages Of Resistance

In what analysts are calling a bold psychological maneuver, Israel reportedly infiltrated a widely used Iranian prayer app over the weekend, sending mass push notifications urging members of the regime’s security forces to defect.

According to reports, the BadeSaba Calendar app — a popular religious utility that tracks daily prayer times and Islamic observances — was used to deliver Persian-language messages directly to millions of Iranian users. The app has logged more than 5 million downloads on Google Play alone, making it one of the most widely accessed religious apps inside the country.

Screenshots circulating on social media show notifications declaring, “Help has arrived.” One message reportedly addressed members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular military directly.

“The era of the dictators is over. Do not sacrifice your lives for a regime that has already fallen. Lay down your arms and join your people. Help has arrived,” the message read, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The apparent cyber operation coincided with the opening phase of a sweeping U.S.-Israeli military campaign targeting Iranian leadership and military infrastructure — an operation that resulted in the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. President Donald Trump described the strikes as part of a “massive and ongoing” effort to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities.

Intelligence observers characterized the app breach as a calculated psychological operation. By leveraging a trusted religious platform rather than state-controlled media or overt broadcast channels, the perpetrators were able to bypass traditional censorship pathways and deliver messaging straight to personal devices. The tactic suggests a coordinated information warfare component operating alongside kinetic military strikes.

The symbolic dimension is notable. Religious apps occupy a central role in daily life for many Iranian citizens, providing prayer schedules and spiritual reminders. Utilizing such a platform to transmit defection messaging signals an effort not only to destabilize command structures, but to undermine the ideological foundation of the ruling regime.

Prior to the military campaign, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly briefed members of the bipartisan Gang of Eight, indicating that senior congressional leaders were informed ahead of the operation.

If confirmed, the infiltration would represent one of the most direct examples of cyber-enabled psychological pressure applied during the conflict. In modern warfare, control of the information environment can prove as consequential as control of airspace or territory. By targeting the devices in citizens’ pockets — rather than television airwaves — the operation underscores how digital tools have become frontline instruments in geopolitical struggle.
