A shooting involving an ICE agent happened in North Austin on Sunday afternoon. An investigation into an incident in Austin’s 7000 block of West Anderson by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was confirmed by the Texas Department of Public Safety to FOX 7 on Sunday. The man shot was a Venezuelan national with a final removal order, according to RedState. He was hit once in the torso and remains in serious but stable condition.
Despite the facts, a false story spread fast. An Austin City Council member claimed the man was shot five times through a car back window. The police quickly said that story was not true. This lie whipped up a crowd that gathered for hours near an overpass. People waved Mexican flags and chanted to abolish ICE.

Reporters from KVUE saw water bottles thrown at law enforcement officers. The crowd moved closer to police tape while blocking traffic on Research Boulevard. Someone wrote “death to immigration agents” on the highway columns. The Austin Police Department declared the gathering unlawful for anyone who stayed.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers put on gas masks as tensions rose. Nearby, Austin police officers stood in formation wearing what appeared to be riot gear. Chemical agents were subsequently deployed by law enforcement to force the crowd to retreat. The group of protesters was targeted by DPS with multiple rounds of pepper balls.

Reporters noted that agitators scrambled and hopped as the activists got hit with the pepper balls. Then multiple Austin Police Department officers rushed into the crowd to detain people. Certain protesters had taken police tape and barricades in order to obstruct roads. This trapped several hundred motorists on a ramp for a long time.

Vinny Martorano of CBS Austin reported that most people left after hours. But some remained to heckle the police. Police then charged forward to seize some individuals and lead them away. Multiple people were detained after the chaos began.
The shooting happened near the intersection of West Anderson Lane and US 183. A dark blue Toyota Corolla sat under the overpass with damage to its door. Bullet holes appeared on the vehicle after the incident occurred. Few details were known early on about what led to the shooting.

State Rep. Vikki Goodwin said this violence cannot continue. She called for more information as facts emerged. Rep. Greg Casar demanded a full, independent investigation and immediate release of body camera footage. He declared that ICE shot a person in Austin this morning.
