Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is facing sharp backlash after expressing outrage over the arrest of a Wisconsin judge accused of obstructing federal immigration agents — a move critics say directly contradicts her own repeated declarations that “no one is above the law.”
Earlier Friday, the FBI arrested Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan on charges of obstruction after she allegedly helped an illegal alien, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, evade arrest inside her courtroom. FBI Director Kash Patel was blunt: Dugan “intentionally misdirected federal agents” and allowed Flores Ruiz to escape, a move that “created increased danger to the public.”
Flores Ruiz, a deported illegal immigrant, was later apprehended following a foot chase — an event that, had it ended differently, could have had deadly consequences.
Yet it wasn’t Dugan’s actions that drew Klobuchar’s immediate ire — it was her arrest. “This is not normal,” the Minnesota Democrat posted. “The Administration’s arrest of a sitting judge in Wisconsin is a drastic move that threatens the rule of law… this is a grave step and undermines our system of checks and balances.”
The irony was not lost on observers. Journalist Stephen L. Miller quickly resurfaced a 2022 tweet where Klobuchar had praised the mantra “no one is above the law,” following the FBI’s raid on President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
Others piled on, noting her prior comments lauding the January 6 Committee for holding people “accountable” and her repeated public statements championing law enforcement action — at least when it was politically convenient.
Prominent attorney Harmeet Dhillon directly called out the senator, replying: “No one is above the law, Senator.”
The inconsistency is impossible to ignore. When federal law enforcement pursued political adversaries, Klobuchar stood firmly behind the rule of law. But when a judge allegedly obstructed justice to shield an illegal immigrant — in direct defiance of federal authority — the senator cried foul.
The incident has forced thought back on the broader debate over sanctuary policies and local interference with immigration enforcement. Democrats have long supported policies that protect illegal immigrants from federal action, while Republicans — and increasingly, the Trump administration — have moved aggressively to enforce immigration law without regard for local resistance.
