Two American pilots found themselves in a nightmare over Iran this past April. Their F-15E Strike Eagle got hit by a shoulder-fired missile. The weapons systems officer, known as Bravo, described the crash as “getting hit by a freight train.” He and the pilot had to jump out of the burning jet. Bravo saw his parachute was damaged. He looked up and knew he was in deep trouble.
He hit the ground hard, moving between 70 and 100 miles per hour. The crash broke his back, arm, and shoulder. He also suffered a sprained ankle and cuts on his head and face. Despite the pain, he knew he had to move. Iranian bounty hunters were already looking for him. He climbed a 7,000-foot ridge line while bleeding. He found a hidden spot to wait for help.
Bravo told CBS News he prayed the moment he saw his broken chute. “Lord, your will be done,” he said. “But if I’m getting through this, I need help.” He spent 50 hours hiding and healing. He watched his partner get rescued six hours after the crash. He felt proud, not jealous, as his friend flew to safety.
When he finally sent a message to American officials, he wrote “God is good.” He told 60 Minutes host Norah O’Donnell that faith was key to his survival. “I don’t have this story without faith,” he said. He made it clear that training matters too. “I’m not saying faith is [a] replacement for training. Training helps us understand what we do. But faith is the backstop of all my actions.”
He did not act like a hero with superpowers. He said he just did what anyone would do to stay alive. “But we all train to adapt and overcome the things that we’re faced with.” He added a joke about his motivation. Absence of motivation must not lead you to Iranian TV. He called his rescue a modern-day miracle.
