Kamala Harris has certainly been enjoying the soft landing the media provided after Joe Biden’s quiet exit from the presidential race in late July, with her quickly installed as the Democrats’ 2024 nominee. For weeks, the press has done everything possible to protect Harris from any serious questions—especially when it comes to her disastrous record on the southern border crisis. But make no mistake, this protective bubble is cracking, and it’s not going to end well for the veep.
Take Harris’ media tour in the past month. The strategy has been laughably transparent—avoid any news outlet that might actually ask tough questions. The Harris-Walz campaign has stuck to the script, favoring outlets like CNN and MSNBC, where softball questions are the norm. In late August, Harris was handed a platter of leading questions from CNN’s Dana Bash while her timid VP pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, sat next to her, doing his best to look relevant.
But the real gem came during Harris’ latest interview on MSNBC with fangirl anchor Stephanie Ruhle. In this pre-taped segment, Harris, unsurprisingly, dodged every question thrown her way. But it wouldn’t be a Kamala Harris interview without some awkward cackling—this time when Ruhle asked Harris about her supposed stint at McDonald’s. When asked if she ever served up burgers, Harris shot back with a cringe-worthy, “I did fries, ha ha ha!” Classic Kamala, right? A non-answer followed by a strange laugh.
What’s even more surprising is that some of her usual media allies are starting to turn on her. Take CNN, for instance—shockingly, they fact-checked her responses. Yes, CNN! It’s almost like the dam is breaking, and even the liberal strongholds are beginning to realize that this whole “Kamala is the next big thing” narrative isn’t holding water anymore.
And over at the New York Times, things have really gone off the rails for the veep. Their review of Harris’ interview with Ruhle was not what you’d call a glowing endorsement. In fact, it was downright scathing: “A hard-hitting Harris interview is still yet to come,” they wrote, noting that she only seems to sit down with interviewers who lob softballs and never press her on evasive answers. Ouch.

What we’re seeing is the media finally waking up to the fact that Harris’ entire candidacy is built on fluff. She talks about “joy” and “aspirations,” but when it comes to actual policy or addressing real concerns, there’s no substance behind the sound bites. The more she tries to dodge and weave her way out of difficult questions, the worse it looks. Her attempts to avoid scrutiny are catching up with her, and even Democrat-friendly outlets are starting to take notice.
Remember when Biden did everything possible to avoid solo press conferences in the early months of his presidency? Even the most liberal reporters were grumbling about his lack of accessibility. Once Biden finally had to face the press, his incoherence and confusion became obvious to anyone paying attention. Harris is walking the same tightrope. The more she’s forced to answer (or avoid) questions, the more voters will see her for what she is—an empty suit who isn’t up to the task.
True that…

Kamala Harris put herself in this corner by trying to dodge accountability, and now, she’s stuck. It’s a sight to behold, watching the media darlings start to turn on her, and honestly, it couldn’t be more well-deserved. Let’s just hope for more.
